OFTP2

OFTP2 is a protocol for secure and reliable file exchange between companies. It was developed for the requirements of the automotive industry and is used there particularly often for EDI messages, CAD data and other business-critical files.
What it is
OFTP stands for "Odette File Transfer Protocol". The second generation, OFTP2, is described in RFC 5024 and was developed specifically for secure data exchange over IP networks.
OFTP2 supports security functions at both session and file level, including encrypted connections, file encryption, digital signatures and signed delivery receipts. Which functions are used is defined in the setup for each partner.
One key advantage is reliable transfer of large files as well. OFTP2 is therefore used in the automotive industry not only for classic EDI messages but also for technical data such as CAD files.
Organisation and system identifiers are used for identification; Odette IDs are common here. The method is closely associated with the automotive industry, but technically it is not limited to that sector.
In practice
Setting up an OFTP2 connection is above all a matter of coordination between partners. Identifiers, endpoints, certificates, security parameters and, where applicable, file-naming conventions have to match on both sides and be tested.
As with AS2, certificate validity, transfer failures and expected acknowledgements should be monitored. In production integrations what happens after the file transfer is equally decisive: a received file has to be recognised, processed on its merits and assigned to a specific transaction in the ERP, TMS or other target system.
In automotive processes in particular, different kinds of data travel over OFTP2. A robust integration therefore separates transmission, business validation and further processing clearly.
When it affects you
OFTP2 is especially relevant for companies in automotive supply chains, but it can be used in other industries too. The requirement often arises directly from a customer's or partner's technical specifications.
When deciding between running it yourself and using a service provider, the main factors are the number of partner connections, the data volume, internal operating resources and security requirements. Coordination with the first trading partner should begin early, because organisational approvals often need more lead time than the technical setup itself.
